November 2011 saw Exmoor designated as an Europes first International Dark-Sky Reserve. Following this Dulverton took part in the BBC’s Stargazing live ‘big switch off’ event.
All of the street and residential lighting was switched off to show that even a small town can produce quite a lot of light pollution. The shop keepers of Dulverton were challenged to decorate their shop windows for the event which would later be judged. On the night of filming BBC astronmer Mark Thompson judged our window to be the best, with the planet cake taking center stage, a replica Saturn complete with rings in cake form!
